About

Hello and welcome!

I’m the little floral-dressed four year old you see there. I have so many photos like this one – miniature me standing proudly over one of my beautiful mum’s birthday cake creations. When August came around each year, out came the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book and she and I would sit down together and pick out the most elaborate, Vienna-cream frosted, 100 & 1000s sprinkled sponge – which usually took the form of some kind of cuddly animal or nursery rhyme character!

I grew up sitting on the kitchen bench top watching my mum and grandmothers transform the most rudimentary ingredients into comforting, aromatic, delicious dishes. The kitchen was a place of peacefulness, discovery, and happiness. It was love personified.

As an adult, it wasn’t until my parents re-located to Asia and I moved out of home that my love for cooking resurfaced. Today I love trying out new recipes and creating dishes that blend memories and scents of the kitchens of my childhood, along with new ingredients and flavours of cuisines around the world. Food remains the connection.

To food, family, and love.

I have the same Women’s Weekly birthday cake picking memories! My mum did a brilliant job – I remember I had the swimming pool one with all the jelly one year, that was my favourite. And the clock. Oh the memories! I’m swooning over your whole blog.

    • Kate Olsson says:

Thank you for the comment, Sam! I’m so glad you have the same happy cake memories. I’m a big believer in that you’re never too old for a WW birthday cake – I recently revived the tradition for my brother’s birthday.. who says you can’t have an aeroplane cake in your mid-twenties?

So glad you are enjoying the blog. Come back soon :) Kx
